No experience needed! At Reigando, we specialize in beginner level training. Beginners will start on a personalized, self-defense focused program and can work toward a more competitive program if desired.
Do I need any equipment to start?
We have everything you need to get started at the Reigando. You only need a positive mindset and practical athletic clothing. A Gi and belt may be available to rent if given prior notice.
What can I expect at my first lesson?
For the first lesson, students can expect a self defense focused technical lesson in a safe, low-pressure environment. We will assess your level and develop a personalized program if there is interest in future lessons.
How does the free trial class work?
Your free trial is a complete 90-minute private lesson with Coach Ray. We'll assess your current fitness level, discuss your goals, teach you some fundamental techniques, and give you a real taste of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There's absolutely no obligation to sign up afterward.
Am I too old/young to start BJJ?
BJJ is for everyone! We've successfully trained students from teenagers to those in their 60s. The beauty of private and semi-private instruction is that we can adapt the training to your age, fitness level, and any physical limitations.
Training & Programs
What's the difference between private and semi-private lessons?
A private lesson will be a one-on-one lesson with the instructor while a semi-private lesson includes another student at the same time slot. We encourage you to bring a partner to learn and train as it is one of the easiest ways to learn and master a technique. Private lessons are $50 for 90 minutes, while semi-private lessons are $25 per person.
Do you offer gi and no-gi training?
Yes! We offer both gi (traditional uniform) and no-gi training. Beginners often start with gi training as it provides more grips and slows the game down for learning. As you progress, we'll introduce no-gi techniques which are faster-paced and more applicable to MMA and self-defense situations.
How often should I train?
For optimal progress, we recommend training 2-3 times per week. This allows time for your body to recover while maintaining momentum in your learning. However, we work with your schedule and goals - consistency matters more than frequency.
Can I compete in tournaments?
Absolutely! While competition is not required, we fully support students who want to test themselves in tournaments. Coach Ray provides specialized competition preparation including strategy, mental preparation, and tournament-specific training.
Dojo Etiquette
What are the dojo rules and etiquette?
To maintain a safe and respectful training environment, please follow these guidelines:
Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed short
Wear appropriate clothing (no hoodies with zippers or buttons)
Remove all jewelry before training
No shoes on the mats
Do not attend if you are sick
Treat all dojo users with respect regardless of race, creed, religion, politics, gender, or sexual orientation
Practical Information
How do I book a session?
You can book sessions through our contact form or by reaching out directly. For private lessons, we'll coordinate a time that works for both you and Coach Ray. Semi-private sessions can be booked with friends or we can match you with training partners at a similar level.
What's your cancellation policy?
We understand life happens. Please provide at least 24 hours notice for cancellations. Last-minute cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session rate. For semi-private lessons, if your partner cancels, you can either proceed with a private lesson or reschedule.
Do you offer packages or monthly rates?
Yes, we offer package deals for students who commit to regular training. Buying sessions in bulk provides a discount from the single-session rate. Contact us to discuss package options that fit your training goals and budget.
Where exactly are you located?
We're located in Mountain View, California. The exact address and directions are provided once you book your first session. Our facility features professional-grade mats, a clean training environment, and all necessary equipment for your BJJ journey.
Safety & Health
Is BJJ safe?
BJJ is one of the safest martial arts when taught correctly. We emphasize controlled training, proper technique, and the importance of tapping out (surrendering) when caught in a submission. Injuries are rare in our academy because we prioritize safety and technical development over ego and intensity.
Do I need to be in shape before starting?
No! BJJ itself will get you in shape. We start at your current fitness level and gradually build your conditioning. Many students find BJJ more engaging than traditional gym workouts because you're learning skills while exercising.
What if I have previous injuries or physical limitations?
We work with many students who have previous injuries or physical limitations. The beauty of private instruction is that we can modify techniques to work around your limitations. Always inform Coach Ray about any injuries or concerns, and we'll adapt the training accordingly.
